Tokenpedia Defining terms for design tokens

Priority

A level meant to indicate importance, typically as it relates to the user.

primary
secondary
auxiliary

In the above examples, primary indicates the most important item to the user. secondary indicates items slightly less important than primary. auxiliary indicates items that exist but are not important in comparison to other priorities.

Important

It must be reiterated that the priority is best meant to indicate how important this is to the user, not how important it is to the organization as they can have different needs and expectations. In other words, the token brand.primary.color does not convey importance as much as it conveys expected use. As in, we expect to use the brand.primary.color where the brand should be prominently displayed using color.
